About Family Information Services

Family Information Services is a directory of therapists and counsellors across the United Kingdom who offer sessions online. It exists to make one thing easier: reading enough about someone to decide whether they might suit you, before you have to speak to anybody.

First, how this site is paid for

Family Information Services is a commercial directory. It is free to use and carries no advertising, but if you go on to sign up with a therapist through a link here, this site will earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

It is not a professional body, a register, or an accrediting organisation, and it is not affiliated with any of them. The commission does not change who is listed or the order they appear in.

Who is listed

The directory currently holds 4,170 therapists, organised across 77 topics and 21 ways of working. Everyone listed is based in the United Kingdom and works online.

Focus areas here are self-selected. The topics on a profile are categories the therapist chose when they set up their BetterHelp account. Someone appearing under a focus area has told BetterHelp they work with it, and nothing more than that. If it matters to you, ask them directly rather than inferring it from this listing.

The same goes for topics: a therapist appearing under a focus area means they list it, not that they are a certified expert in it.

Credentials, and what they are not

This directory covers the United Kingdom only. The credentials you will see are memberships of professional bodies - most often BACP, NCPS or HCPC registration - and the credentials page explains what each one means.

These are registers and memberships, not licences. There is no UK equivalent of the US state-licensure system, so nothing here describes anyone as "licensed". We show the credentials exactly as supplied and do not verify them - if one matters to your decision, the issuing body's own register is the place to check it.

What this directory does not do

Nothing on this site is medical advice, a diagnosis, or a treatment recommendation, and no page here can tell you what you are experiencing. That is a conversation for a clinician who is actually talking to you. What this site can do is show you who works with it and how they describe their own approach.

If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, please call 116 123 to reach Samaritans. It is free, open at any hour, and it is not this directory.

Where the information comes from

Therapist details - credentials, registrations, years in practice, focus areas and ways of working - come from BetterHelp, the platform these therapists work through. We do not collect it from therapists directly and we do not verify anyone's standing ourselves.

The written summaries on each profile are produced with the help of AI, working only from those facts. They are written not to add anything that is not in the source information - no invented specialisms, diagnoses, availability or results. If something looks wrong, please tell us and we will correct it.

How listings are ordered

Ordering is not for sale: no therapist pays to be listed, to rank higher, or to be featured. There are no ratings or reviews here, because we have no reliable source for them and would rather show nothing than invent a score. We also do not publish whether someone is taking new clients - it changes constantly and anything we showed would be out of date by the time you read it.

What this site is not

Family Information Services is not a healthcare provider, a clinic, or a therapy practice. We do not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, we are not part of your care, and nothing here is a substitute for speaking to a professional. We are also not BetterHelp, and we are not involved in your sessions or any arrangement you make.

Deciding whether a particular therapist is right for you is your call, and worth taking your time over.

If you are in crisis, call 116 123 to reach Samaritans. It is free and open at any hour. In an emergency, call 999.

If you are a therapist listed here

If you would like your profile corrected or removed, contact us and it will be dealt with. Removal means the profile is taken down across the site, not just hidden from search. You do not need to explain why.

Get in touch

Questions, corrections and removal requests all go through the contact page.

Otherwise, you can browse all therapists or start from what you are facing.
